Writing by Heart

This is a course designed for students Grades 3-8 and homeschool families with children ages 9-14 years old.

Using the metaphor of "panning for gold," David and Meredith will work with students to help them to listen to and trust their hearts’ guidance in crafting stories, poems, comics, and narratives of all types! We will use the Four Steps in the Storying protocol:

  1. Attention (Launching the Expedition)

  2. Affection (Staking a Claim)

  3. Approach (Start Digging and Panning)

  4. Allowance (Let the Gold guide you)

Together with David’s expertise in storytelling and writing, and Meredith‘s 30 years as an educator, children will be supported in their writing process as we create an environment that encourages them to listen to each other and be supported as they spin their tales. Children will submit their writing samples to David and Meredith on a regular basis and they will receive feedback and mentoring.

How will Writing by Heart help children?

  • The lessons and practice will help children discover their innate talents and strengths as writers

  • Our creative approach will help to encourage ‘reluctant writers’

  • The course work will help children learn not only more about how to write and tell, but also how to listen.

  • We teach about self-trust while discovering the power of honesty and authenticity

  • We teach how to find strength in service and humility. We write for others.

  • We learn to value our "mistakes" and challenges in our work, and spin them into gold.

We are offering both an Interactive format, where children will have direct contact with David and Meredith, and a DIY version for those of you would prefer to guide your children independently. Below you will find a more detailed description of the two writing courses that will help you make your choice.

Both courses have the following in common:

  • An Orientation and four foundation video lessons guiding the children through the creative steps of writing by heart.

  • Email Access to David and Meredith for questions, support and inspiration

  • Both courses will be available on Tuesday, September 3.

  • 50% discount on individual 30 minute student consultations with David or Meredith

Here is a conversation between the two teachers about the “Writing by Heart” course.

My son worked so well with David and Meredith in the Superhero training. Their approach was creative, supportive and appropriately challenging.
— Sara L.
David and Meredith have been very inclusive and sensitive to my children’s needs. They are responsive as well as encouraging. My children so enjoyed the connections they built with them as well as the others in the Superhero camp!

CAN MY CHILD DO THE CAMP COMPLETELY ON HER OWN?

Your child/student can watch the videos and complete the practice worksheets & projects on her own, however we recommend parent overview of the child's participation in the course. Some of the exercises ask the child to be introspective and self-aware, in ways that may be new to them. Children may want or need parent-engagement in this process. Lastly there will be practice worksheets to print and supplies to gather, which will may necessitate parent support.

WHAT IF WE MISS A WEEK OF THE INTERACTIVE COURSE?

Though we encourage interactive campers to join us as much as possible for the live video lessons, it is not necessary. Children can do this camp at their own pace and always interact with David and Meredith and other students on the written forum. Every week a recording of the video training will be posted on the course website, and it will be available to you indefinitely. We do host two live video trainings a week, one on Wednesdays at 5PM EDT and Thursdays at 12 Noon EST.Children can choose which of the two weekly time slots works best for their schedule.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR THIS COURSE?

For the Interactive Writing by Heart Course:

There are two short video lessons every week, each at about 5-10 minutes long. There is one practice assignment with each lesson which we estimate could take anywhere from 10-30 minutes depending on how thorough your child wishes to be. There are also “Adventurer” exercises that are more comprehensive that could take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.

The weekly interactive sessions last on average 45-60 minutes. There are also written forums where campers can connect with David, Meredith and other writers. Their involvement on the forum depends on how much time they wish to spend there.

For the DIY Writing by Heart Course:

There are two short video lessons every week, each at about 5-10 minutes long. There is one practice assignment with each lesson which we estimate could take anywhere from 10-30 minutes depending on how thorough your child wishes to be. There are also “Adventurer” exercises that are more comprehensive that could take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ & WRITE TO PARTICIPATE?

Yes. As writing is a capacity that stems from the ability to read and digest language, we do ask that your children are able to read with some facility and know the basics of letter and sentence formation. David and Meredith will be encouraging and guiding content, but are not positioned to thoroughly edit grammatical, spelling and mechanical errors. We will be asking the children to work within their personal capacities there, or receive guidance from another adult to support them if needed. The worksheets are created with learning differences in mind, and David and Meredith will glad work with all types of learners.

HOW DO THE FORUMS WORK?

In the Interactive Camp, we will have access to a written "forum" where students (or parents/teachers) can post comments and ask questions. The are set up just like comments on a blog post, where David and Meredith can respond to each comment as they come in - and “threads” may form on a particular subtopic. We will be using the software DISQUS for our forum.

WHY IS THERE "LIMITED ENROLLMENT" ON THE INTERACTIVE COURSE?

David and Meredith directly communicate with and support children through the entire writing course experience. There are interactive forums plus weekly live video lessons where the children chat with the teachers as well as each other. Because of this, and because we want to give the requisite attention to our participants, we are keeping the numbers low.

If you miss this round, no worries!  You can still purchase the DIY course!

CAN TWO OR MORE CHILDREN TAKE THE INTERACTIVE COURSE UNDER ONE REGISTRATION?

For the Interactive course, one registration is for a single child. Due to the high-level of interaction with the students, David and Meredith will be supporting children in their practice, discovery and development over the twelve weeks. If you'd like for all of your children to participate under one sign-up, then you might consider purchasing one of the DIY camps where all the lessons and resources are provided just without the interactive components.

IS THERE A SIBLING DISCOUNT FOR THE INTERACTIVE CAMP?

Yes, we can offer a sibling discount for siblings. Email us for details: meredith@davidsewellmccann.com.

WHAT IF I AM UNHAPPY WITH THE COURSE?

We would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact us in the first two weeks after the start of the Interactive Course or after two weeks of your purchase of the DIY Course (after the course begins, of course) and we will give you a full refund.
