How to be an Intuitive Channel
Aug 12, 2026St. Francis of Assisi: "Let me be a channel of thy peace."
Henry David Thoreau: "Open new channels, not of trade, but of thought."
Human beings are natural channels, but few do it consciously or intentionally.
Every day, we accidentally channel our parents, teachers, favorite thinkers and celebrities who affect what we do, say or think. Sometimes I hear my father’s words come out of my mouth while giving advice to one of my kids. Or I’ll become Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid while riding my bike. Or I’ll claim a turn of phrase that could have been (and probably was) written by Cormac McCarthy. You do it too. All day long, we incorporate thoughts and phrases and movements that came from someone else. We try to be kind like Dolly Parton, or intimidating like Mike Tyson and our posture changes or we narrow our eyes or feel a warmth in our cheeks. We are channeling them. This is channeling, and we can use the same process to channel wisdom, information, advice, and emergent ideas.

The first time I consciously channeled a nonphysical “entity”, it creeped me out.
I can’t remember why I tried this or where I got the instructions, but I opened myself to channeling an entity that could speak through me. I believe that was the extent of my intention, so you can see that I did not follow the indications above. I did what I now warn others NOT to do. It wasn’t long before I “caught one”. It was not a possession or an overcoming wave of energy and anything very dramatic at all, but it was clearly something “other” than me and after a brief interaction, I came out of the experience feeling like I had done something I should not have done. It just felt wrong.
Now, those of you who identify as intuitive or psychic or as a channeler know that this capacity doesn’t “box” well. It doesn’t easily stay on the shelf following the rules. In my case, my intuitive side influenced everything I did as a teacher and parent and then as a writer, but I didn’t always call it intuitive, nor did I realize that I was channeling. I used intuitive practices every day and all day, but I was called it being creative or being sensitive. Now I know it is the same thing, and have since learned to be intentional and contained in my practice. Over many years of making mistakes and messes, I can now say I know what I am doing and the skills are real. I received guidance and learned a clear code of conduct. This gave me the acumen I sought and now intuitive practices are what I do every day and all day, and all in service.
This is the role of the blue throat chakra step in intuitive storytelling. This is essentially what Lieutenant Uhura did for the Starship Enterprise, or the role Deanna Troi held in the Next Generation. Uhura was the communications officer and Troi was the ship's counselor who often served as a mediator in negotiations with beings from other parts of space. Uhura spoke many different languages and specialized in linguistics and cryptography. Troi could read the emotions of others. Both often served as translators when the ship would encounter intelligent life forms on their adventures. With intuitive storytelling, the storytelling of the yellow solar plexus is internal, while the blue throat storytelling is dialogic used to reach out, connect, and communicate with intelligence at the edge of our understanding.

Intuitive storytelling has given me access to some very wise and powerful beings, and many have become familiar collaborators. I have found that identifying the collaborators make the process more real and effective, but this might be a stretch for some of you. This next section about Ascended Masters, Angels, or Aliens might be a bridge too far, but I recommend you wear their descriptions lightly, like putting on a Halloween costume, or dressing up for prom. Its not you, but in a little way, it kind of is.
Choosing who to Channel
Ascended Masters
An Ascended Master is a term used in some religious traditions, to describe spiritually enlightened beings who were ordinary humans, but who have undergone a process of spiritual transformation. This transformation allows them to access a higher spiritual plane of existence and some very cool information. They can be teachers or guides for humans, helping them to achieve their own spiritual advancement. In my experience, the ascended masters I've encountered have a far more complex understanding and experience of time and space. They are less held by our linear time and aren't in a specific location. This makes them available and ready whenever needed. I love working with them, and the team I have collected has specialties I can integrate into my work.
Angels
Angels show up in various cultures and religions, often representing divine messengers or intermediaries between the divine and human realms. In Christianity, angels are seen as messengers from God, often appearing in the Bible to proclaim good news or to guide and protect certain individuals. They are often depicted as glowing winged people, maybe with a halo, and they can often fly. In Islam, angels are believed to be made of light and are incapable of sin. They have various roles, including delivering revelations from God, recording a person's actions, and delivering a person's soul at the time of death. In Judaism, angels are also divine messengers, appearing in the Torah to guide and assist the prophets. They are generally not worshipped or prayed to in Judaism, as they are simply servants of God. In other cultures and belief systems, such as in Zoroastrianism and certain New Age philosophies, angels can represent spiritual guides or protectors. On social media, people talk about encountering angels on a regular basis.
In my experience, angels are pure love and light. They are benevolent beings that are ready to guide and protect me as I continue forward on my spiritual development. They are indeed the "highest light" and I feel great knowing that I can call them to me whenever I need some of that light and warmth.
Aliens
Working with aliens can be pretty wild and wooly. It is a wide open adventure, and therefore, I recommend collaborating with aliens only when you implement the safeguards and precautions in the previous section. There are many theories and speculations about extraterrestrial life, and some of these theories include the concept of different alien races. While these are not scientifically proven or universally accepted, they are often discussed in the channeling world, and I think it is a bunch of fun to consider. It also helps you clarify what sort of entity you want to work with. I have found nine alien races mentioned in most of the literature:
- Greys: Probably the most famous, they are often depicted as small beings with grey skin, large heads, and big black eyes. Think “Disclosure Day” or “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
- Reptilians: These are theorized to be humanoid beings with reptile-like features. Think “Enemy Mine” or the Silurians in Doctor Who.
- Nordics: Also known as Pleiadians, they are described as human-like with Nordic features, often associated with benevolence and spiritual advancement. Think “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and the Asgard race in Stargate.
- Arcturians: Believed to be from the star Arcturus, they are often associated with spiritual wisdom and advanced technology. No movie appearances though mentioned in Star Trek and Aliens.
- Sirians: Thought to be from the Sirius star system, they are often associated with ancient civilizations like Egypt. They are jokingly included in the Power Rangers S.P.D. TV series but a few documentaries discuss them.
- Andromedans: Believed to be from the Andromeda galaxy, they are often depicted as highly evolved, peaceful beings.
- Venusians: As the name suggests, they are theorized to originate from Venus and are often associated with love and harmony.
- Anunnaki: Originating from ancient Sumerian mythology, they are said to have been gods or extraterrestrials who influenced early human civilizations.
- Zeta Reticulans: Often associated with the Greys, they are said to come from the Zeta Reticuli star system.

Remember, these descriptions are based on theories and speculations, not on scientific evidence or universally accepted facts. I work with a group of aliens that I call “the Aldebaran” because they hail from a planet in the Aldebaran star system. They do not fit into any of the above categories and I couldn’t tell you what they look like.
If you choose to move forward with this exercise, I recommend doing what I do and only engage with entities that are of the “highest light” meaning that they are only interested in supporting my best self and the best selves of those around me. I have encountered entities that have not met this bar, and found them to be challenging to shake off. They are sticky and not to be messed with. Create or find a verse you can say out loud before beginning to make it clear that you will only work with the good guys.
Channeled entities can be a powerful source of inspiration and guidance for your storytelling, problem solving, planning, and creativity, so it's crucial to select an entity that aligns with your intentions and values.
Take some time to reflect on your own beliefs and values. Consider what qualities you want the entity to embody and how you want their message to resonate with your audience. Research different entities and their stories to find one that resonates with you on a deep level. You can use the following journaling exercise to help you.
Journaling exercise: Choosing an Entity.
What kind of experience are you seeking? Are you wanting information? If so, what information. Do you want to experience a particular feeling? Do you wish to resolve or transform something?
Describe the kind of individual you like to work with. What qualities do you like in a guide, mentor, teacher, or friend?
After doing your research, what kind of entity or individual has the best chance at helping you with the above intention?
What kind of entity best describes the kind of individual you’d like to work with?
And importantly, what guidelines or protections will you put in place so that you receive your desired result, and not attract any unwanted information, feelings or influence?
Ways to Channel
So what does conscious and intentional channeling look like in practice? Again, there are many different types of channeling or intuitive practices. Some are listed below but many are not. The important thing is to notice how you receive subtle information and communication. Do you see things? Hear words? Suddenly smell something or get a tingly feeling? Most channelers interact with nonphysical entities through subtle or “clear” versions of the senses.
Below is a list of these “clear” senses and I encourage you to sit with each version for a moment and ask yourself if you have every seen, heard, tasted or received any subtle bit of information that you could rationalize away as “just a figment of your imagination.” This is very common. We all do it. We imagine something and then dismiss it. For this practice, I invite you to avoid dismissing it.
Each of the “clear senses” can be explored in much greater depth, and practices can be developed to enhance these abilities. Like me, you might experience a combination of several, and it might change from entity to entity. I can say I’ve experienced all of these senses at different times and in different interactions I’ve had.

These are often referred to as types of psychic abilities or spiritual gifts:
Clairvoyance (Clear Seeing): This is the ability to see beyond the physical, to see the future or distant events, to see auras or energy fields, or to see spirits or other non-physical entities.
Clairaudience (Clear Hearing): This is the ability to hear sounds or voices that are beyond the range of ordinary hearing, such as hearing spirit voices, messages, or guidance.
Clairsentience (Clear Feeling): This is the ability to feel the emotions, energy, or physical sensations of others. It's often associated with empathy.
Claircognizance (Clear Knowing): This is the ability to just know something without logic or information. It's a sense of inner knowing, often coming as sudden insights or ideas.
Clairgustance (Clear Tasting): This is the ability to taste something without actually putting it in your mouth. It's often used to receive psychic information through taste impressions.
Clairolfaction (Clear Smelling): This is the ability to smell things outside the range of ordinary smelling. It could be the smell of a deceased loved one's perfume, or the smell of danger, for example.
Clairtangency (Clear Touching): Also known as psychometry, this is the ability to receive information about an object, person, or event by touching it.
Clairescence (Clear Essence): This is the ability to understand a person or situation's true essence beyond what is visible to the naked eye. It's a deep sense of knowing and understanding the very nature or essence of something.
